How High Should I Install My Windsock? (Australia Edition)
It’s about 4:20pm here in the workshop, and I thought—why not tackle one of the most common questions we get from customers across Australia?
“How high up should I place my windsock?”
Well, the answer depends on what you’re using the windsock for.
What’s Your Windsock Meant to Show?
Are you using your windsock to indicate wind direction in the event of a gas or chemical release on a mine site or industrial facility?
Or is your windsock being used to give a quick visual cue to foot or vehicle traffic at a marina, farm entrance, or construction site?
Maybe you’re setting it up in a busy area like a CBD jobsite where tall buildings disrupt wind flow?
Here’s the Simple Rule of Thumb:
-
Install your windsock higher (around 6–10 metres) if it’s needed for safety monitoring—such as gas or chemical dispersal, especially in mining, oil & gas, or industrial sites. A higher mounting position gives a clearer picture of wind direction away from obstructions and ground-level turbulence.
-
Install it lower (around 2–3 metres) if it’s meant for public visibility—like in carparks, on farms, sports fields, docks or roadside areas where passers-by or vehicles need a quick read on wind direction.
And if your site is in a dense area with lots of nearby structures—think cranes, scaffolding, or high-rises—keeping the windsock closer to ground level (but still visible) may help maintain an accurate wind reading without too much interference.
