Description

Airport Heavy-Duty Windsocks

Airport windsocks are a fail-safe, life saving instrument that are used all over Australia for one purpose: safety. As a last line of defence, it is imperative to ensure your windsocks are always in good condition and functioning correctly. The Custom Windsock Company sets the standard for the best quality airport windsocks in Australia. Our orange and white airport windsocks are made of a 300D PU ( Polyurethane coated) polyester that is waterproof, hi-Vis Fluorescent and has superior tensile and colourfastness properties to other windsocks on the market.

Quality Construction- You can be assured that our variegated airport windsocks are made with quality materials and are built to last: The body of the windsock is made of 300D PU polyester, the inlet mouth is constructed with 2 layers of 300D PU polyester, 1 layer of high strength webbing reinforcement and a stiffening band that protects against high velocity winds gusts.

High Strength Materials: Independent tests on our 300D PU polyester resulted in 1218 Warp (N) and 1221 Weft (N) tensile strength. What does that mean? It means your airport windsocks are made of a high-strength fabric that is tested to meet the demands of daily use in extreme Australian outback and marine conditions

Light and Responsive Airport Windsocks-   Lightweight windsocks are imperative to detect slight wind speed and directional changes. Our high strength heavy duty windsocks and durable in all weather conditions and still well in even the slightest breeze.

Sizing

Heavy-Duty Windsock Sizing

So you need a windsock..but now, what size?

Windsock size is often dictated by your viewing distance and how the windsock will be mounted. Of course, if you already have a frame, your windsock diameter will be set and you only need to choose a length that worlds for you. See our Visibility of Windsocks Guide below for more information

How to Measure your Existing Windsock

It can get confusing sometimes on how windsocks are measured. The standard is always to measure windsocks diameter and length and present it as: diameter" x length". See the below infographic guide on how to measure a windsock and determine the diameter

How to Measure Windsock Diameters

HOW TO MEASURE A WINDSOCK IN METRIC FOR AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

Fitting a Windsock onto Your Double or Extended Hoop Frame

If you have a double hoop or extended hoop frame, you should ensure the replacement windsock you purchase will fit over both the outer and inner hoop of the frame. Every frame manufacturer has a different standard and thus some measuring is required to ensure that your replacement windsock will fit onto your frame. Your two options are:

  1. If you do not have an existing windsock: Measure the diameter of the second hoop as well as the distance from the first hoop to the second hoop. See our visual guide below on which dimensions we require.
Infogrpahic on how to measure a double hoop or extended windsock frame

2. If you do have an existing windsock that fits your frame: Measure diameter of the inlet mouth, the length of the windsock as well as the diameter of the outlet mouth. See our guide above on how to measure a windsock.

Installation

Heavy-Duty Windsock Installation

For Windsock Frame Sizes 450mm, 600mm, 900mm from the Custom Windsock Co.

Step 1) Purchase a Windsock Frame

Step 2) Purchase a stainless steel ¾ NPT female coupling and a ¾  NPT male pole. One size of the coupling will thread into the bottom of the windsock frame and the other will thread onto your pole. The pole you purchase may be long or short, depending on your application and if you are going to attach it to anything else. These can easily be purchased from your local hardware store

Step 3) Attach the pole onto your structure

  • Side of building or wall: You may want to use a vertical mount like this:
  • On another pole: If you’re looking to put your windsock high in the air on a pole, chances are that a small diameter pole like above won’t do the trick. You can use another coupling with one side being ¾ NPT and the other side being larger so it can attach onto another larger diameter pole that can be installed in the ground. The other option is to attach it onto your larger diameter pole with hose clamps or banding

Step 4) Install the windsock with the use of HD UV rated zip ties (don't buy the white ones, the black ones are usually UV rated.

Note: all frame manufacturers have different specifications. Contact the manufacturer of your frame for instructions on mounting.

FAA Compliance*

FAA Windsock Compliance*

The Custom Windsock Co has invested in testing its' fabric with the current ASTM standards as well as real-world conditions.

The fabric testing standards stated in the FAA Specification for Windcone Assemblies (FED-STD-191A) are outdated and obsolete as they were published in 1978. No commercial lab in the US has the ability to test on these standards anymore. The industry testing standards have been replaced by equivalent ASTM standards.

We have tested our fabric on:

ASTM D5035 Standard Test Method for Breaking Force and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Strip Method) - Type 2C

  • Our fabric results for the above current testing methodology: 1218 N Warp and 1221N Weft
  • The outdated tests stated in the FAA Specification for Windcone Assemblies require a passing tensile strength of:  667 N Warp and 667 N Weft

ASTM G154-21 Standard Practice for Operating Fluorescent Ultraviolet (UV) Lamp Apparatus for Exposure of Materials

  • Our fabric results for the above current testing methodology: Slight change in color over the exposure period
  • The outdated tests stated in the FAA Specification for Windcone Assemblies require require:  “Good” or “Excellent” rating for colorfastness

Conclusion

We are confident that, if the FED-STD-191A standards were being tested today by any commercial laboratory, our windsock fabric would meet or exceed the requirements stated in FAA Specification for Windcone Assemblies as they have surpassed the equivalent and current industry standards.
